One-on-one PCAT Tutoring

The PCAT is standardized, but our students are not. We have helped thousands of students raise their PCAT scores through our customized private tutoring program. How can we help you?

As seen in:

Prepare For The PCAT With A Customized Tutoring Program

PCAT Tutoring That’s Built For You

At Next Step Test Preparation, we believe that an exam shouldn’t keep passionate students out of pharmacy school. If you’ve a great GPA and a ton of research experience, why should the PCAT serve as a roadblock? That’s why we work one-on-one with each and every student to build a tutoring program tailored to their unique strengths, weaknesses, and needs.

Whether you’re just starting on the PCAT, have already taken a prep course, or need an intensive review of one of the exam’s components, we’re here to help.

“Phil is a lifesaver! Before I worked with him, I was studying twice as long and learning half as much. We spoke a lot about effective studying and I am seeing the results with every practice test I take.”

PCAT Tutoring Program

We start each student off with a practice exam. This helps us determine the areas in which they’re strongest – and those in which they need the most work. Typically, students are weaker in one of the sciences, and most require at least some assistance with verbal skills and reading comprehension.

Once you’ve completed your practice test, your PCAT tutor will work with you to draft a schedule of your program. Generally, you’ll meet with them once or twice a week over a course of one to four months, for two hours at a time. However, we’re flexible in terms of scheduling – you can meet with your instructor as often or as infrequently as you feel is required.

Each session usually runs the following schedule:

  • A discussion of homework from the previous session, and an assessment of overall progress.
  • In-depth coverage of new topics, with focus on weaker areas
  • Assignment of homework to be completed by the next session.

We also specialize in the following test cases:

  • Students aiming for a top 10% score: These students don’t need help with the basics. Instead, they need to focus on strategic problem-solving and test-taking skills. That’s what separates average scores from the top percentile.
  • Students with substantial math difficulties: Many students are highly comfortable with core sciences and verbal content, but still experience difficulty with math. Students experiencing difficulty in calculus especially will find us a good fit.

Materials and Methodologies

How Tutoring is Different

Next Step Test Preparation is the only national prep company focused exclusively on one-on-one tutoring rather than lecture-style class instruction. Every year, hundreds of our students come to us after having taken the prep courses – having seen little to no score increase. Time and again, we hear students tell us that they wish they would have skipped the prep courses (saving $2,000+) and gone straight with individual tutoring. What makes tutoring different is the ability for our instructors to carefully plan a customized program. Most broadly, the pace and focus areas of a program for a student starting starting with different scores will be very different. But even for an individual student, you’ll find you are better at some things and worse at others – and you’ll waste time reviewing material you’ve already mastered.

One-On-One Tutoring Sessions

Most PCAT programs take place in a classroom setting – not the best place for comprehensive review. Next Step Test Prep, on the other hand, focuses on one-on-one sessions. With one of our veteran instructors, we’ll set you up with the best program possible. See our tutor bios.

A Focus On Strategy

We’re not interested in tips and tricks – our focus is on understanding. There are many different paths to success, and our flexible approach ensures that our students find one that works best for them. This is particularly noteworthy in the verbal and reading comprehension portions, which generally require a personalized verbal strategy – not the artificial methods often used in lecture halls.

We help you stay engaged and accountable

Ask your friends who have taken the prep courses whether they were dialed in at 9:30pm after a full day of work or school. While prepcourse students receive lessons passively and only ocasionally ask a question, our students are fully engaged with their tutor for the entire session. And, our tutors make sure you are taking the right steps and putting in the time to be successful – you are not just a face in a crowd.

Flexible Scheduling and Start Dates

Our PCAT tutoring students also value our flexible scheduling and ability to get a prep program kicked off within a week. Instead of waiting for a new class to begin, wasting valuable prep time, you could be working through a customized program that starts right away and meets on your schedule – not a company schedule. Instructors often have availability daytimes, nights, and weekends.

Learn From Anywhere

In addition to offering flexible start dates and scheduling, our PCAT program is available in two forms:

  • Online through a live one-on-one video conference.
  • In person in one of thirty select cities.

Whichever option you choose, you’ll gain access to our most experienced instructors, and to a program that’s made exclusively for you.

Professional one-on-one tutoring is a significant investment in your success, but one that can pay off in admission to better medical schools and more financial aid. While our program is still a major investment, we’ve been able to keep prices lower by limiting our overhead expenses — while paying our tutors more to retain the most experienced, highest-scoring DAT instructors. We offer multi-payment plans on any tutoring package.  Contact us for details.

Expert Instruction.

Incredible Results.

Next Step Test Preparation students work one-on-one with an incredible PCAT tutor. Frequently, our instructors worked for years at other prep companies or independently before joining our team.  Each of our PCAT instructors have a sterling academic record and years teaching the PCAT. But more importantly, they each have demonstrated the ability to teach these concepts to students throughout the score  range.

Our tutors aren’t the “sage on the stage” – they adapt the lessons to students of all abilities. Our instructors work through a three-phase hiring process before they work with our students. We would be happy to discuss the specific credentials of our PCAT private tutoring in your area; just contact us for a complimentary consultation.

Philip has scored 99% on the PCAT (457 composite) and holds degrees in Biology and Chemistry and minored in Philosophy. He then spent four years at the University of Nebraska Medical Center where he received a full scholarship and stipend to obtain his Medical Degree and a PhD in Pharmaceutics and Experimental Neuroscience. He tutored for four years at the International Headquarters for Supplemental Instruction and then an additional 3 years teaching pre-health students at a major national test prep company before joining Next Step. Outside of the academic world, he enjoys camping, swing dancing, and banjo playing.

Kevin is a doctorate of pharmacy candidate at the #1 ranked pharmacy school in the nation, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received his bachelor’s degree at the University of Texas at Austin with a focus on biochemistry. He scored within the 94% percentile on the PCAT in 2013, including 99th percentile in chemical processes. He has tutored and taught with several organizations in the past ranging from middle school students up to college students. Most recently, he was the teaching assistant for two first-year pharmacy classes: Pharmaceutics and Molecular Foundations of Drug Action. Kevin has a unique way of teaching by making a seemingly difficult subject look easy. His enthusiastic and upbeat nature helps motivate students to get the scores they want while having fun doing it. Outside of tutoring, Kevin enjoys listening to kpop/jpop and watching anime.

FAQ

Q: I know some big prep companies will re-train SAT tutors to teach other tests. How do I know my instructor will be qualified?

Each of our instructors has scored highly on an actual PCAT. At Next Step, you will work with a PCAT specialist.

Q: What if I don’t get along with my instructor?

98% of our students have been pleased with their instructor. However, if for any reason you’re not pleased we can switch instructors or offer a pro-rated refund for unused hours.

Q: Is this really better than a prep course?

We sure think so. Think about it this way — in any other area of your life, have you felt it was more effective to sit in a lecture course than to work individually with an expert? Would you go to the doctor with 20 other patients? Next Step takes PCAT prep seriously — that’s why we offer only the best service.

Q: Why haven’t I heard of Next Step? I’ve only heard of the companies that I see on campus.

We are able to offer one-on-one tutoring services for the price of a group lecture prep course because don’t invest in expensive brick and mortar test centers, and we don’t spend tens of millions per year in advertising. Most of our business comes from referrals and word of mouth. When you spend $2,000 on a prep course, the vast majority of that cost is going to the advertising it took to get you there. We think there is a better way.

Q: Can I buy just one hour of tutoring?

While we can arrange a demo lesson before students commit to a longer package, we don’t think it’s effective to meet with a tutor just once. This sets the wrong expectation – that there are secrets to the PCAT that a student can learn in an hour and then instantly make a huge increase. Our program is a long-term partnership between student and tutor.

Phil is a lifesaver! Before I worked with him, I was studying twice as long and learning half as much. We spoke a lot about effective studying and I am seeing the results with every practice test I take. -Kenny H

Getting into pharmacy school can be an expensive adventure. You have fees for the PCAT, applications, and plenty of other financial obligations. Then, on top of it all, you have to pay for tuition once you get in.

Next Step wants to help defer these costs. We know how difficult and expensive this process can be and we’d like to help make it a little less stressful. So, we are offering a scholarship to help get you started. Each year we will be giving one grand prize winner $1000 and one runner up $200.

So, how do you apply?

  • Submit a resume
  • Submit a copy of your informal transcript
  • Write an essay in 500 words or less answering the following question: What was a recent event that reaffirmed your desire to become a pharmacist?
Fields marked with an * are required

Next Step Test Preparation will award 2 checks to chosen winners for $1,000 and $200. Offer is open only to undergraduate students in the United States and Canada. One submission per person. Submissions for the 2018 scholarship must be received by midnight, May 31, 2018. Next Step staff will choose winners based on dedication to pursuing a career in the pharmaceutics and academic record.
