Next Step Test Preparation works closely with students to devise a totally customized tutoring program, setting them up with an instructor, lesson plan, and schedule tailored to their unique educational needs. We’re one of the few tutoring companies to set students up in one-on-one sessions with incredibly qualified GMAT instructors, all of whom have achieved top scores on the exam. With their improved GMAT scores, Next Step students have been admitted to over 100 schools – often with significant financial aid. Since 2009, we’ve worked with thousands of students. What’s more, our students have gained admission to the following institutions:
- Michigan State
- WashU – St. Louis
GMAT Tutoring Program
Each Next Step Student starts their tutoring program with a diagnostic exam that gauges their current score level, strengths, and weaknesses. We also collect the past test scores of students who have already taken the GMAT. Although there’s some variance, our programs usually take place over the course of two to four months, with one or two two-hour sessions per week. At each session:
- Students discuss their homework from the previous session, and assess their overall progress
- Weaker topics are reviewed, and new topics are covered in-depth
- Homework and practice exams are assigned for completion between sessions
We also specialize in the following two GMAT test cases:
Students who have already completed a prep course: Many of our students have taken a GMAT prep course, only to feel that they’ve not received the preparation they require. We help create a focused program to get you fully prepared, even after a prep course. And unlike those courses, we don’t waste time on the basics – we can zero-in on the areas where you are struggling most and focus time and energy there.
Students who have already taken the GMAT and want a better score: Re-taking the GMAT is never a fun experience for working professionals. Unfortunately, if you’re shooting for a competitive MBA program, you often need help boosting your score – and that’s where we come in. We’ve helped students improve their GMAT scores on a retake by up to 150 points.

What Makes Next Step The Best Choice?
Here’s why Next Step stands above other tutoring programs:
We don’t expect anyone to learn as part of a collective. Everyone learns a little differently, which is why we pair each student up with a single veteran instructor, who devises a lesson plan based on how they learn, what they know, and what they need to work on. It’s really the best way to learn, as any of our successful graduates will tell you.
An Emphasis On Problem-Solving
We don’t focus on tips or tricks, nor do we focus on meaningless memorization. Instead, we teach proven strategies that help students understand the fundamental concepts necessary to master every section of the GMAT. In order to earn top scores, students really have to understand the material. Working one-on-one with a tutor, you’ll learn to break problems down conceptually by seeing how the test creators want you to work through them. If we work together, you will receive:
- 3 official GMAT Guide books, loaded with well over 1,500 practice questions
- 7 computer-adaptive practice exams for timed practice
- Our proprietary workbook, organizing Official Guide questions into strategy areas — so when you learn the number substitution strategy, you can instantly practice it on a dozen real GMAT questions.
A GMAT Program That Works With YOUR Schedule
Our courses are completely customized, meaning students can start at any time – and continue for as long as they still require instruction. We offer the same one-on-one GMAT tutoring services delivered two ways:
Live video conferencing: one tutor, one student. Work with a personal instructor with over 3 years of tutoring experience and a 99th percentile score on the GMAT. Our online students do as well, or even better than, our in-person students.
Our online programs give you the chance to work with a world class test tutor, no matter where you live. We’re glad to arrange a demonstration of how the video conferencing format works.

Professional one-on-one tutoring is a significant investment in your success, but one that can pay off in admission to better MBA programs. While our program is still a major investment, we provide tutoring that is both higher quality and lower priced than our competitors. We do this by maintaining a laser-like focus on one thing only: private tutoring. Most of our competitors focus their instructor training and development on lecture-style classroom courses. Our focus also lets us retain the best talent by paying our tutors more – ensuring you have the best possible experience and the highest possible scores on Test Day.
We offer multi-payment plans on any tutoring package. Contact us for details. Our packages include all material the material you will need – there are no additional fees for materials, taxes, or hidden fees.
*Competitor rates are taken from corporate websites at time of publication and may not be up to date.

How Does Next Step Test Preparation’s one-on-one GMAT Tutoring Program Compare to Group Courses like Kaplan?
“Chris was an unbelievable help to me. On my first day of studying, I took a GMAT practice exam and scored a 480. To get into the business school I wanted, I needed to score above a 600. So, that’s when I decided I needed a tutor. I worked with Chris once a week for two months and after that time I scored a 610 on the GMAT exam on my first try. I was thrilled. Chris was very honest and upfront about how to be successful on the exam. I followed his instruction and he got to exactly where I needed to be. He was very good about following up with during the week and tracking my progress. There is no way I would’ve scored above a 600 without Chris’s help. I recommend him to anyone looking to pursue graduate school!!”
Next Step Test Preparation students work one-on-one with an incredible GMAT instructor. Frequently, our instructors worked for years at other prep companies or independently before joining our team. Each of our GMAT instructors has scored in the top percentiles of the exam. But more importantly, they each have demonstrated the ability to teach these concepts to students throughout the score range. Our tutors aren’t the “sage on the stage” – they adapt the lessons to students of all abilities. Our instructors work through a three-phase hiring process before they work with our students. We would be happy to discuss the specific credentials of our tutor in your area; just contact us for a complimentary consultation.

GMAT Success Stories
Q: Will I need to buy any additional materials for the tutoring?
No — all necessary materials, including prep book and practice exams, are included in the tutoring fee. If you’d like to receive a PDF of our prep book table of contents, [email protected] are shipped directly to your home or office via USPS Priority Mail.
Q: I know some big prep companies will re-train SAT tutors to teach other tests. How do I know my instructor will be qualified?
Each of our instructors has scored highly on an actual, GMAC-administered GMAT. At Next Step, you will work with a GMAT specialist.
Q: What if I don’t get along with my instructor?
98% of our students have been pleased with their instructor. However, if for any reason you’re not pleased we can switch instructors or offer a pro-rated refund for unused hours.
Q: Is this really better than a prep course?
We sure think so. Think about it this way — in any other area of your life, have you felt it was more effective to sit in a lecture course than to work individually with an expert? Would you go to the doctor with 20 other patients? Next Step takes GMAT prep seriously — that’s why we offer only the best service.
Q: Why haven’t I heard of Next Step? I’ve only heard of the companies that I see on campus.
We are able to offer one-on-one tutoring services for the price of a prep course because don’t invest in expensive brick and mortar test centers, and we don’t spend tens of millions per year in advertising. Most of our business comes from referrals and word of mouth. When you spend $1,400 on a prep course, the vast majority of that cost is going to the advertising it took to get you there. We think there is a better way.
Q: Can I buy just one hour of tutoring?
While we can arrange a demo lesson before students commit to a longer package, we don’t think it’s effective to meet with a tutor just once. This sets the wrong expectation – that there are secrets that student can learn in an hour and then instantly make a huge increase. Our program is a long-term partnership between student and tutor.
