There are a lot of factors to consider when choosing which schools to apply to; ranking systems are an easy to use tool that can help guide your decision. U.S. News lists out the top Pharmacy schools based on a peer review of the overall academic quality of the program.

So, what are the top Pharmacy schools for 2016? Below you’ll find our summary of US News’  top 10 schools, along with the average GPA and PCAT scores for those who are accepted, the prerequisites for the program, and when you should apply.

Check out the schools below with details on their PharmD programs:

1 – University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill (Eshelman School of Pharmacy)

Prerequisites

This program requires that students complete two years of undergrad, or 72 credit hours, before admittance. Although, they note that 80% of students admitted in the last year already had a bachelor’s degree.

The PCAT is required for acceptance into this program.

They list their prerequisite courses here; you are expected to have a grade of C- or higher in each of these courses.

Deadlines

They expect that you will take the PCAT no later than November the year you are applying. You will need to submit your scores to PharmCAS.

The PharmCAS deadline is December 1st and the deadline for the program’s supplemental application is January 15th. You will know whether or not you’ve been accepted in April.

PCAT and GPA

2 – University of Minnesota

Prerequisites

While this program does not require you to have a bachelor’s degree before admittance, they do state that 90% of students enter with a bachelor’s degree. You can find a list of their prerequisite courses here; you are expected to have a grade of C- or higher on each of these courses.

You are required to take the PCAT in order to apply to this program.

Deadlines

This program has rolling admissions, so you will want to apply as soon as possible. They accept applications between August and March, though they strongly suggest that you submit your PharmCAS application by mid-January.

You will want to make sure that you are taking the PCAT early enough to get your scores in by mid-January at the latest.

PCAT and GPA

The average GPA is 3.55 and the average PCAT score is in the 81st percentile for students accepted into this program. They will not ask for a supplemental application unless the applicant has at least a 3.0 PharmCAS GPA, or a 3.2 GPA in the 60 most recent credit hours, and a 70% composite PCAT.

3 (tie) – University of California – San Francisco

Prerequisites

The pharmacy program at UCSF requires 62 completed credit hours and these courses before admission. They don’t require a bachelor’s degree, but they believe that having one when entering the program is beneficial. They list their minimum eligibility requirements here.

The PCAT is now required by UCSF as of 2016.

Deadlines

You will need to submit your application by November 1st. Make sure that you are taking the PCAT prior to October 1st to ensure that your scores are submitted on time. Scores can take 4-6 weeks to release; try to aim for a mid-September date at the latest.

PCAT and GPA

The average GPA is 3.55; they will not accept applicants with a GPA below 2.8. Since the PCAT is a newer part of the application process for UCSF, they do not currently have an average PCAT score for admitted students nor do they have a minimum score required for admission.

3 (tie) – University of Michigan – Ann Arbor

Prerequisites

You can find a list of the prerequisite courses required for this program here. They don’t list a required number of credits prior to application, but they make it clear that the prerequisite courses must be completed.

You are required to take the PCAT before applying to this program.

Deadlines

This program requires that you take the PCAT before the calendar year you are applying to – so, if you’re intending to matriculate in Fall 2017, you will need to take the PCAT prior to January 1, 2017. The deadline for applications is January 5th, though, so they suggest that you take the PCAT in July. They don’t recommend taking the PCAT later than November.

PCAT and GPA

The average GPA is 3.5 and the average PCAT score is in the 75th percentile for students accepted into this program.

3 (tie) – University of Texas – Austin

Prerequisites

The list of prerequisite courses required by this program can be found here. You will need at least two years of undergraduate work and all of the listed prerequisites before entering this program.

The PCAT is required to apply to this program.

Deadlines

Applications need to be in by November 1st for this program. They require that you take the PCAT before October; it can take 4-6 weeks for your scores to be released, so make sure that you are giving yourself plenty of time.

PCAT and GPA

The average GPA for this program is 3.5 and the average PCAT score is in the 85th percentile.

6 (tie) – Ohio State University

Prerequisites

This program lists its minimum requirements for admission here; you can find the necessary prerequisite courses at the bottom of the page. Unlike the other programs on this list, Ohio State University requires that you have a bachelor’s degree prior to admissions. You will also need to take the PCAT.

Deadlines

The deadline for applications is early February, so make sure that you’re taking the PCAT accordingly. Since it takes several weeks for PCAT scores to be released, you should sit for the PCAT no later than December. .

PCAT and GPA

The average GPA for students entering the program is 3.52 and the average PCAT score is in the 85th percentile.

6 (tie) – University of Illinois – Chicago

Prerequisites

In order to enter this program, you must have completed 65 credit hours by the end of spring semester. You can find the list of required prerequisite courses here. This program also requires the PCAT.

Deadlines

The priorities deadline for applications is January 5th; final deadline is March 1st. Make sure that you take your PCAT accordingly. The early November dates should be far enough in advance for you to get your scores in on time.

PCAT and GPA

The average GPA is 3.6 and the average PCAT score is in the 76th percentile for students entering this program.

6 (tie) – University of Kentucky

Prerequisites

This program requires that you have a minimum of 70 credit hours, including all of the prerequisite courses, completed by the end of the spring semester prior to fall enrollment. You will need to take the PCAT to apply to this program.

Deadlines

The application deadline is March 1st, but they suggest having everything in by the beginning of February. If you’re aiming for the deadline, you would be able to take the January PCAT and have plenty of time to get your scores in; however, if you’re looking to get your application in earlier, you’ll need to sit for the exam prior to the January dates.

PCAT and GPA

Students entering this program have an average GPA of 3.6 and an average PCAT score in the 79th percentile.

9 (tie) – Purdue University

Prerequisites

Applicants are required to have completed the pre-pharm program at Purdue or equivalent coursework at another institution. Unlike all of the other schools on this list, the PCAT is not required by this institution.

Deadlines

Applications are due by December 1st for this program. Since the PCAT is not required nor weighed in the admissions process, there is no need to worry about taking it; although you will likely have already taken it as part of your applications to other institutions, there’s no need to plan your PCAT calendar around Purdue’s relatively early deadline.

PCAT and GPA

The average GPA for incoming students is 3.5. They do not track PCAT scores as they don’t consider them during the admissions process.

9 (tie) – University of Florida

Prerequisites

The PCAT is required for applicants. This program also has a list of prerequisite courses they expect applicants to take; the list is located at the bottom of that page.

Deadlines

The application deadline is March 1st, so any of the PCAT dates should be fine, though you may want to take an earlier test date in order to submit your application ahead of schedule.

PCAT and GPA

Students entering this program had an average GPA of 3.4 and an average PCAT score in the 79th percentile.

It is important that you do your research and decide which schools you want to apply to. It is important to know which schools you intend to apply to early so that you can make sure you meet all of their requirements and take the PCAT in a timely way. Once you’ve decided on schools, you’ll need to keep track of their deadlines.

The PCAT is an important part of the application process. While not all pharmacy schools require that you take the PCAT, the majority of programs do.
